Birmingham Infrastructure Projects Advance with Major Works Underway

Birmingham City Council has moved forward on several large-scale infrastructure schemes in recent months. The HS2 Curzon Street Station reached completion of 2,011 foundation piles in early 2026, marking a concrete step in the station's construction phase.

HS2 Station Foundations Completed

The station building at Curzon Street is now planned for completion in 2028, with full passenger services expected around 2029. This progress forms part of wider transport connections that link into other city schemes.

Highways Framework and Market Redevelopment

The council launched a new £1 billion Highways and Infrastructure Works Framework (P1228) to deliver road improvements and utilities upgrades over the next eight years. Separately, the £1.9 billion Smithfield redevelopment continues to convert the old Wholesale Markets site into a new district that will include over 3,000 residences, a new marketplace, and major transport connections.

Rail Hub Consultation and Airport Works

A consultation has launched for the £1.75 billion Midlands Rail Hub scheme, which is intended to add millions of extra seats, with Birmingham Moor Street gaining 14.2m and New Street gaining 5.4m extra seats. At the same time, Birmingham Airport is constructing a £30 million departure lounge extension as part of a wider 15-year £500 million masterplan to increase capacity by 45%.

Development Corporation Sanctioned

The government sanctioned a new £11 billion Birmingham Eastoral Development corporation to accelerate projects including the Sports Quarter stadium and a £4 billion Knowledge Quarter. These initiatives sit alongside the other transport and highways programmes already in delivery.
