Birmingham City FC has selected architects Populous to design its new £3 billion Sports Quarter training center in Bordesley Green, adjacent to a planned 62,000-seat stadium. This selection forms part of efforts by the club to update its operational base while serving surrounding neighbourhoods.
Football Training Centre Details
The project places the training centre next to the planned stadium in Bordesley Green. Birmingham City FC will work with Populous on the design. The arrangement allows the club to maintain daily training routines and host community sessions in one location, supporting how the team operates year-round.
Cricket Redevelopment and Practice Upgrades
A £42 million redevelopment of Edgbaston Stadium, home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, has been approved by Birmingham City Council. Construction starts in September and aims to finish before the 2027 Ashes Test. Separately, new cricket practice nets funded by the England and Wales Cricket Trust were unveiled at Sparkhill Park. These nets are scheduled to open for bookings in March 2026. Warwickshire County Cricket Club and the trust can therefore expand coaching and match preparation while giving local players regular access to improved pitches and nets.
Leisure Centre Opening for Broader Use
A brand new £7.5 million leisure centre in Erdington, the first of four new council complexes, officially opened to the public on Monday, September 4. The centre adds indoor and outdoor spaces that local clubs and community groups can book for sessions. This supports everyday club operations by providing additional venues beyond traditional stadiums and parks.
These projects together give clubs in Birmingham clearer timelines and dedicated spaces. Birmingham City FC can plan training blocks around the new centre. Warwickshire County Cricket Club gains modern facilities at Edgbaston and Sparkhill Park for both elite and community programmes. The Erdington leisure centre extends options for smaller clubs that run weekly activities. Construction and opening schedules already set in the approvals mean clubs can adjust their calendars in advance rather than react to delays.
Residents and clubs can monitor booking systems at Sparkhill Park from March 2026 onward and check updates from Birmingham City Council on the remaining leisure complexes. The approved timelines at Edgbaston and the design work at Bordesley Green provide fixed milestones that clubs can reference when organising sessions and events.
