Birmingham, Alabama's tech ecosystem features homegrown unicorns Shipt in ecommerce and Fleetio in automotive alongside more than 1,000 attendees at the 2025 Sloss Tech conference. These elements distinguish the city from other regional hubs by pairing proven exits with early-stage activity in AI and related fields.

The $44 million federal grant secured in January 2025 supports Tech Hub efforts across biotechnology, fintech and energy tech. This designation places Birmingham among 31 nationwide sites competing for up to $75 million in additional resources, giving local companies a direct path to scale without relocating to larger coastal markets.

Innovation Depot anchors daily operations

Innovation Depot serves as the central gathering point, housing over 100 startups and 1,000 employees inside the developing Innovation District. Startups such as Linq, which raised $20 million for an AI messaging platform, and VeroSkills, founded by CEO Daniel Walsh, operate from this base while the facility connects them to shared resources and potential partners.

The same district supports active hiring in fintech, healthcare and AI. Companies including Occupi and NewMIGO currently recruit for technical roles, drawing talent through recurring programs hosted at the depot and nearby venues.
