From Cannon Hill to Sutton Park, Birmingham's free weekly 5k events are pulling record numbers — here's how to find the one that suits you.

More than 2,500 people laced up their trainers across Birmingham last Saturday morning and ran, jogged, or walked a free 5k before most of the city had finished breakfast. Parkrun UK's West Midlands figures for June 2026 confirm that participation at Birmingham's seven active events is up roughly 18 percent on the same month in 2024 — the highest recorded in the region since the programme relaunched after Covid restrictions ended in 2021.
The timing matters. With household budgets still squeezed and gym memberships in Birmingham averaging £35 to £50 a month, the appeal of a structured, timed, community run that costs absolutely nothing is straightforward. Parkrun's model — show up, scan your barcode, get your time emailed to you — removes almost every barrier that stops people exercising regularly. No subscription, no contract, no kit requirement. Health professionals at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust have been pointing patients recovering from mild cardiovascular conditions toward local parkrun events as part of guided activity plans since 2023.
Cannon Hill Park in Edgbaston remains the flagship. The course starts near the Mac arts centre on Edgbaston Road and loops the boating lake twice before finishing on the main path by the pavilion. It is flat, well-marshalled and routinely attracts 400-plus runners on a dry Saturday. Volunteers — the event depends entirely on them — typically number around 30, drawn from local running clubs including Bournville Harriers, who have supported the event since its founding in 2012.
Sutton Park in Sutton Coldfield offers a very different experience. The course crosses heathland and skirts Bracebridge Pool along a route that can be genuinely muddy between October and March. The trade-off is scenery that most urban runs cannot match: 2,400 acres of ancient parkland on the city's northern fringe. Average finish times here run about 90 seconds slower than Cannon Hill, which tells you something about the terrain. First-timers should register on the national parkrun website before 9am on the day — late registration is not accepted.
Smaller but no less committed, the Woodgate Valley Country Park event in Bartley Green draws a loyal crowd of 150 to 200 most weeks. The loop takes in the Bourn Brook valley and is particularly popular with parents pushing running buggies, since the surface is mostly compacted path. Perry Hall Playing Fields in Perry Barr hosts a flat, fast course that has become a favourite for personal-best attempts. Aldridge Road provides easy access by bus from the city centre on the 51 route.
Registration is a one-time process at parkrun.org.uk. Print or download your barcode, show up at 9am on a Saturday, and you're in. There is no requirement to run — walkers are explicitly welcomed and make up around 15 percent of participants nationally, according to parkrun's own 2025 impact report.
That same report, covering data from across England, found that 46 percent of first-time parkrunners who attended at least three events within their opening month were still participating six months later. Consistency, not pace, appears to be the thing that keeps people coming back. The social element is significant: the post-run café at Cannon Hill Park's pavilion, open from around 9:45am, regularly sees groups of regulars who have been meeting there for years.
For anyone unsure which event to try first, distance from home is the most practical guide — all seven Birmingham venues are mapped on the parkrun website under the 'find an event' tool. Sutton Park suits those who want a challenge and don't mind mud. Cannon Hill suits beginners wanting company and a flat road. Perry Hall suits anyone chasing a time. The best one is almost always the one you'll actually get out of bed for on a cold July morning — and with Birmingham's parkrun community this active right now, getting started has rarely been easier. Consult your GP before beginning any new exercise programme if you have existing health concerns.
